Story of the Day

The Capitals’ current roster features eight Stanley Cup winners (Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, T.J. Oshie, Tom Wilson, Darcy Kuemper, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Trevor van Riemsdyk) and five players with 70 or more games of playoff experience (Ovechkin: 147 GP, Carlson: 123 GP, Oshie: 102 GP, Wilson: 83 GP; Max Pacioretty: 74 GP). Among teams that qualified for the playoffs, Washington’s eight Cup winners are the fourth most, trailing only Vegas (21), Colorado (13) and Tampa Bay (9), the teams that have accounted for the last four Stanley Cup championships.

In addition, Washington has nine players that could make their Stanley Cup Playoff debuts (Charlie Lindgren, Hendrix Lapierre, Beck Malenstyn, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Aliaksei Protas, Michael Sgarbossa, Alex Alexeyev, Vincent Iorio, Lucas Johansen). Washington has 10 players age 26 or younger on its active roster, eight of whom set career highs in games played this season. Hendrix Lapierre, Connor McMichael, Aliaksei Protas and Beck Malenstyn – all Capitals draft picks – also established career highs in points in 2023-24.
