Story of the Day

The Capitals visit the Philadelphia Flyers tonight at Wells Fargo Center for the regular season finale. Washington can clinch a playoff berth with a win of any kind. The Capitals and Flyers split the first two games of the season series, with Washington winning the most recent matchup 5-2 on March 1 at Capital One Arena. In their only other game in Philadelphia this season on Dec. 14, the Capitals dropped a 4-3 decision in the shootout. Dylan Strome leads the Capitals with five points (2g, 3a) in two games against Philadelphia this season, while Tom Wilson has registered four points (1g, 3a) in two games. Washington is 98-112-19-12 all-time vs. Philadelphia and have a record of 9-3-1 in their last 13 games at Wells Fargo Center.

On Feb. 8, the Capitals had a record of 22-20-7 and trailed the Detroit Red Wings by seven points for the second Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference. Since suffering a 4-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Feb. 8, the Capitals have gone 17-11-4 in their final 32 games and can now secure the second Wild Card spot with a win. Washington is looking to make the playoffs for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons and the 33rd time in franchise history. In addition, the Capitals have an opportunity to clinch their 15th playoff berth in the last 17 seasons. Only Boston (15) and Pittsburgh (15) have as many playoff appearances since 2007-08.
