Story of the Day

The Capitals face the New York Rangers in Game 2 of their First Round series tonight at Madison Square Garden. Washington will look to even the series after dropping Game 1 4-1 on Sunday. The Capitals have an all-time record of 12-9 in Game 2s following a loss in Game 1, including a 4-2 record when losing the first game of a series against the Rangers.

John Carlson led all skaters with 27:24 of ice time in Game 1, which marked the sixth-highest total in a non-overtime playoff game in his career. Carlson ranked first the NHL in ice time per game (25:54) during the regular season, which marked a new career high (previously 25:03 TOI/GP in 2018-19). Carlson logged 86:18 of ice time in his last three games of the regular season (28:46 TOI/GP), including 29:20 in the Capitals’ regular-season finale on April 16 at Philadelphia. It marked Carlson’s League leading 14th game with 29-plus minutes of ice time this season. No other skater in the NHL had more than nine games with over 29 minutes of ice time. This season, Carlson was the only player in the NHL to record at least 1,600 minutes of even-strength ice time, 250 minutes of power-play ice time and 200 minutes of shorthanded ice time.
