With their 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night, the Capitals clinched a playoff berth for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons and for the 33rd time in franchise history. Washington’s 15 playoff appearances since 2007-08 are tied with the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins for the most in the NHL in that span.
The Capitals, who were seven points out of playoff position on Feb. 8, went 4-1-0 and allowed just eight goals in their last five games to secure the second Wild Card spot. Washington closed out the regular season by playing 22 games in 41 days, including 11 games against teams that qualified for the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Capitals’ lineup for their final two games featured seven players age 26 or under and four players with fewer than 100 games of NHL experience.
