Caps Today, 5/17

Today’s Storyline
The 94th Memorial Cup is set to begin this Friday, May 18 in Shawinigan, Quebec. Each year, the Memorial Cup is awarded to the champion of the Canadian Hockey League, which is comprised of three “junior hockey” leagues: The Western Hockey League (WHL), The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The round-robin tournament features the host team, the Shawinigan Cataractes, and the champions of each of the three leagues (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL; London Knights, OHL; Edmonton Oil Kings, WHL).

Washington Capitals prospect Stanislav Galiev (third round, 86th overall in 2010 NHL Draft) will participate in his second-consecutive Memorial Cup tournament with Saint John. The 6’2”, 187-pound forward helped Saint John win the Memorial Cup last season and finished the QMJHL playoffs tied for the scoring lead with 34 points (16 goals, 18 assists) in just 17 postseason games with the Sea Dogs. Galiev’s 16 goals led the league while his 18 playoff assists ranked tied for third.

Galiev was named the final CHL Player of the Week for the 2011-12 season after producing seven points in two games, scoring four goals and three assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-8 for the week ending May 13. He tallied three goals and two assists in the President Cup-clinching Game 4 vs. Rimouski.

The Memorial Cup will open on Friday with Edmonton facing tournament-host Shawinigan. Galiev’s Saint John Sea Dogs will face the London Knights on Saturday, May 19.
